Here’s a great thickness planer that exceeds expectations and won’t break the bank. It’s got some great features in addition to the built-in Jet quality woodworkers have come to rely on.

A four-post system supports the rollercase and lets it ride smoothly and accurately for micro-depth changes as well as large adjustments. We like the six-position workpiece thickness preset gauge; it’s a great time-saver for repeat cuts, and the detents are at the most common dimensions of 1/8-, 3/8-, ½-, ¾-, 1- and 1-1/4-inch thicknesses. It’s easy to use, too: Just push the preset depth gauge and rotate it until the measurement you want is on the front, facing you. The rollercase locks securely with just a pull on the lever, guaranteeing you uniform thickness. We found it also helps reduce snipe when you’re just working a single board. The scale itself is clear and easy to read.

The cutter head features two knives with an rpm of 8,000, giving you 16,000 cuts per minute and a finish as clean as a whistle. We appreciate the double-edged knives for their economy, and when it does come time to change out the knives, you’ll appreciate the relative simplicity of the process.

This planer’s got a generous capacity, making it perfect for the home woodworker as well as the professional, with a 13-inch width and a max height under the rollercase of 6 inches. Be aware, though, that if you’re planing a larger board –from 5-1/2 to 13 inches wide – you’ll want to keep your max depth of cut to 1/16-inch. Jet warns that you can go deeper than that, but you’re running the risk of wearing out your motor.

Jet’s mounted rollers on top of the planer to make life a little easier for you, especially when you’re making several cuts on a long board. Just slide it across the top of the planer as you step from back to front.

Portability’s great, too, so if you’re looking for a hard-working planer to tote to the jobsite, this is one of the best. There are inset side handles to help you keep your grip when moving this machine, and it’s easy on the back at about 65 pounds. The feed tables fold up to save space in your truck bed or your shop, too.

If we could have anything we wanted, we’d wish that Jet would include the dust hood with the planer, because it’s a messy proposition to operate this tool without it being hooked up to a dust-collection system. It’s an inexpensive purchase, but a necessary one.

In all, you can’t beat this planer for features, accuracy, power and reliability, and you won’t regret this purchase.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

 "One minor problem..." 2007-05-06
By F. Smith (Nashville, TN)
I've not been able to control snipe very well on this planer. Even with porper board support and the carriage lock engaged I still get a fair amount of snipe. The snipe gets much worse as the blades dull. The blade changes are very easy to do though. Over all, it is a nice little planer and does what its' supposed to. I wouldn't try production work on it though.

 "No problems so far" 2005-03-09
By Carl Jeffery (Boise, ID USA)
This is my first thickness planer and am very happy with my purchase. I agree that a dust hood should be included and is a pretty pricey extra, but well worth it. As with my other Jet tools, I'm amazed at how well it performs out of the box with minimal adjustment.

I looked at a lot of other benchtop planers, and trusted Jet's reputation and took the plunge. The finish this produces is smooth, adjustment is easy and I get very little snipe. I was hesitant with it only having two blades, but it seems to work just fine, plus it will be cheaper when it comes to replacing blades.

I appreciate Jet's simplicity and performance. I'm sure this tool will be in my shop for many years.

"Great planer but missing a dust collector port" 2005-01-01
By R. Buchanan (San Francisco Bay Area)
This is a significant upgrade over the older 12.5" Jet planer. Auto set knives are a breeze to set-up, and unlike the DeWalt 13", you don't have to buy the in/out feed tables. The two speed feed results in a very clean finish and the locking head dramatically reduces snipe - it doesn't stop it. I don't know why accessories for this model are so hard to find unless Jet is trying to blow out the 12.5" stuff first.

MAJOR COMPLAINT - no dust collection port, it's an option? (How to create a wood chip snowstorm in the shop? Don't use a dust collector on your planer.) Amazon doesn't even carry the optional dust port - nice touch, huh? I had to have Woodcraft order it for me and it took two weeks to get it.

I still love the finish this planer produces and it's very easy to set-up and adjust. I gave it 4 stars because they decided not to include a dust port that must cost them all of $5 to produce.

ATTN JET Product Managers: Raise the price $10, add the dust collector port, and get a MUCH HAPPIER customer. You have no price pressure at $429 - the competition is the DeWalt at almost $600 with the in/out feed tables.

 "Another Amazon Failure" 2007-02-07
By Randall R. Anderson (Napa, Ca USA)
I've recently talked to a seller on Ebay who had high praises for this planer. The only knock I've heard is the blades can't be sharpened. That's why I'm giving it four stars. I ordered mine four months ago and have been notified by Amazon that it will be another month before delivery. In fairness to Amazon they have answered my emails on the delay. They say the order is being processed and have apologized and offered me a $20 credit for my trouble. They still advertise a 4 to 6 week delivery in their listing for the tool. Hummmmm, anyway, I plan on using the planer to clean up dimensioned timbers for a house I'm building. The Ebay seller I contacted thinks that's a good application. When I get the planer I'll write a more indepth review.

And it continues----Just got notified by Amazon of another delay. we're approaching 6 months now. I talked to a customer rep and she suggeted I buy from someone else that I'll probably never get the planer as Amazon doesn't sell it any more. She also said she has no way of making up price differences if I go to another seller (e.g. Tyler Tool). Still they adverise it available within 4 to 6 weeks so I'm going to wait. When I asked who I could talk to about the delay, She suggestet I write the CEO, Mr. Bezso. Now that was a useful suggestion. I'm sure I'd be Mr. Bezso top priority.

 "Top Quality" 2007-03-08
By George F. Kane (San Antonio)
I bought this planner after first buying a "bargain brand". I first came upon this planer on a construction site over twenty years ago. I don't know if it's the very same model as then, but they still make a Makita sander that looks like mine and it's going on 18 years old too. I like Makita quality. They seem to get the design right and stick with it. This planner worked great right out of the box. In fact, it planed so quickly, that I wanted to use it more to get a better feel for the tool, but the job was already done. It was smooth and no tear out. I use it primarily to pre plane boards that have a twist or have excessive bow, before feeding into my surface planer or jointer. The carpenters I knew, used to plane doors to fit after the house had settled and the doors started sticking. The depth of cut adjustment will determine wether you take a lot or a little off on one pass. Shallow passes repeated is usually best for a smooth finish, but I take larger bites when I'm planing for rough dimentioning. Oh, by the way, the very reasonable price makes this planer an excellent choice.

"Still cut paper after months of use" 2008-07-27
By A_G (CA United States)
I recently bought these to replace the others in my planer, and when I took the old knives out they still sliced paper! The finish they left on wood wasn't as smooth and polished looking as these new ones leave, but if they can still slice paper that means they are sharp! At nearly $50 for the set they certainly aren't cheap, but I'm only on my third set in four years. I don't use my planer daily, but I am a rather avid woodworker so it doesn't sit idle for months either. Planing mostly very hard tropical hardwoods is the norm for my machine. These knives are made in Taiwan, but to my surprise they are not in any way lacking because of it. As an aside, they are also very easy to reverse/change. Definitely five stars.

"Great tool for the price!!" 2010-03-07
By J. Baldaray (Riverside, California USA)
I needed a power planer to shave off some wood off a gate that had swollen due to rain, but did not want to spend a lot of money for a tool that would be used just occasionally. I was skeptical of this tool due to the price compared to others costing much more, but decided to take a chance. Long story short, the Black & Decker did a great job. Within a few minutes I shaved off just enough for the gate to close without having to take it off it's hinges. Nice and level cut, easy adjustment of depth of cut. Glad I took a chance.

"Wish I had this before..." 2010-02-16
By M. Sun
Before I purchased this power planer I used a hand planer to shave down high spot on 2x4 before installing drywall, it cost me about $35 for the hand planer, and it gets difficult when you hit a knot. Then I found this planer for about $65 and it gets the job done in couple seconds compares to hours, it ran through the knot like it's not even there! Not only it's quick, the finish is impressively smooth too. For those (like me) thinking about getting a hand planer just for couple small jobs, the extra $30 is definitely worth it, plus the replacement blades are cheaper than the ones for hand planer.

"Good points and bad points" 2005-11-19
By J. DeAre (Wheaton, IL)
I recently picked this planer up for a small job that involved squaring some pine. It did a good job but the weaknesses of the tool were fairly obvious after only a little use.

Background: I compared this planer to the comparable Ryobi. The Ryobi had a few features the B&D didn't, mainly a "kickstand" to protect the blade when not being used and a dust port that can be switched from left to right. The Ryobi also had a loose front plate, which didn't seem like a good idea to me. So I chose the B&D.

First the good: It did a very good job on the pine I was planing (which involved 4 pieces glued together that needed to be flat on 2 edges). It was very easy to use and the depth adjustment has very positive indents so you know how much you are removing. In general, I was very impressed with the results I got out of the tool.

The bad: I use hand planes a lot, so I naturally wanted to use the front handle on this power planer. Unfortunately, that is also the depth adjustment, and on my second cut I managed to turn it halfway through, making it deeper. I also wanted to use the fence to square the face I was planing. I was successful in this, but the fence is incredibly flimsy (mostly plastic). It may last fine, but I guess I would prefer all metal or at least thicker plastic. Also, I noticed the motor sounded like it was struggling a bit when I went to the deeper cuts. Maybe this is normal, but it seemed like there could be trouble if you try to do the same thing in hardwood. Finally, I can see why other brands include the kickstand (basically a blade guard, so you're not setting the tool on it's blades all the time). I didn't much like the fact that I would be resting the planer on it's blades every time I set it down (you also have to make sure the blades aren't still spinning, although in my own use this was not an issue).

So, basically, this is a tool that works well, but could maybe use a bit of refining. I returned mine, and I'm not sure what I'll replace it with. FWIW, in this price range, I think there's always going to be a bit of compromise, and I think the B&D's weaknesses are easier to live with than the loose front plate on the Ryobi.

Got this machine 2 months ago from Amazon and really like it. It's very simple and robust. The calibrations were dead on.  "Great Cheap Planer" 2010-01-21
By Robert W. Baldwin (Clinton Township, MI USA)
I paid $205 for this planer at Lowe's because it is being replaced by a Porter Cable model that appeared to me to be nearly the exact same tool. The sales guy at Lowe's told me it was being replaced by the P.C., so I'm taking his word for it. To the review:

Setup was simple, you don't need a narrative about this. It planes smoothly if you take small cuts. I prefer to do no more than 1/4 turn of the adjustment handle at a time, which is somewhere around 1/32" if I had to guess. It can handle a deeper cut, but this is what I prefer to do because it does not bog the tool down. On that note, run it on a 20 amp breaker to give it sufficient power.

If you have dust collection capabilities, buy the optional hood with the dust port because this, like ANY planer, will make a huge mess.

The knives do not last as long as others, but they are two sided and indexed, so setting is a breeze.

"Good for the hobbyist / Bad for the serious woodworker" 2010-01-14
By W. Ashton
This is a decent planer for the customer I believe Delta is targeting - the light hobbyist. It will plane small volumes of wood (4-5 boards at a time (max)) but it will only plane, at most, 1/16" each pass with any amount of quality, and there will still be some snipe. Obviously, you'll spend a lot of time reaching the the desired thickness but for occasional use, that's probably okay. Beware that the unit heats up very quickly and really bogs down if attempting more aggressive cuts, or if attempting to plane hard woods like oak or hickory. bottom line - for the infrequent user, small projects, and soft woods, this will do an adequate job and should last for years.

For serious woodworkers who build large projects on a regular basis, you need a tool with more capacity. You'll burn this tool out very quickly (my motor literally melted), will spend A LOT of project time reaching the desired thickness and will be less than satisfied with the cut quality. Wish I had forked out the extra $200 to get a beefier unit in the first place. Now I'm paying the price - a second time.

"Not for the serious woodworker" 2009-11-09
By D. Harder (Topeka, KS USA)
While the price may be tempting, if you are wanting this for large projects, large quantities or hardwood, or just a lot of use, invest in a better machine. This will not make the recommended depths of cuts on very many board feet of wood before getting hot. I learned to work in small batches and give the machine a rest, but what I really needed was a planer that could work when I wanted to for as long as I wanted to. The warranty is out on mine, the motor totally shelled and a replacement motor cannot be purchased. This is a low-use throw-away machine and Delta should be ashamed to have their name on it.

Item works pretty well. The only negative is that when this is over the top of a garbage can there is so much force moving the chips out they try to blow out of the garbage can under that tie down strap. Needs to have a wider strap to seat properly (and tighter) onto the garbage can. Overall works much better than throwing wood chips all over my shop area.

Results are modestly satisfactory. Overall a quality shop vac will serve the same purpose with less capacity but is adequate for occasional usage. Complete containment of dust is not possible as very fine particles escape from the top of the hood. Over priced.

 "Wonderful Innovation" 2008-09-06

PROS:

Having used several other planers, the DeWalt 735 is a real winner. I have 3 of these units. I placed the planers on a Rubbermaid carts & slid 30 gal trash cans below (bottom shelf). What a blessing - to plane & not have dust / chips flying everywhere. Thess planers are super & super easy to use (& change blades).

CONS:

The draw string doesn't grip sufficiently. But, adding a ratcheting strap clamp solves that problem.

"chip hood for Dewalt planer" 2008-09-01

The hood works well with a 30 gal trash can but a 55 gal drum would work better if your doing quite a bit of work. Putting a rope over a beam and raising the flex tube in a U shape help's also. I'm happy with the way it work's and on a scale of 1 to 10, I give it an 8 as there is some fine dust that come's through the cloth.

"Chip Collector directs wood chips where you want them" 2008-08-01
By David F. Danboise (Oswego, NY)
Most useful accessory I have purchased for my shop in years. If you do not have a vacuum system in your shop, the Chip Collection Accessory is a must have.

The chip blower on the DeWalt DW735 planer is powerful enough to direct the chip through the 10 foot plastic hose and into whatever receptacle you secure the fabric hood over. I use a 30 gal plastic garbage can. The draw string secures around the outside of the rim of the garbage can. 95% of the chips are collected directly in the garbage when you operate the planer.

The only negative thing is that with the draw string attaching to the rim of the garbage can, there are some chips that will collect between the outside of the rim and the fabric hood. When you take the hood off, these chips will fall directly on the floor at the base of the garbage can but they are all around the garbage can and makes clean up easier.

As the ground wire connects directly to the DW735 planer making removing the hood a bit more complicated, I crimped a spade type connector onto the end of the wire. When I want to remove the Chip Collector, I simply unplug the ground wire from the DW735 and release the locking collar ring from the planer discharge port.

Good value product. I would definitely recommend this accessory.
