I needed a power planer to shave off some wood off a gate that had swollen due to rain, but did not want to spend a lot of money for a tool that would be used just occasionally. I was skeptical of this tool due to the price compared to others costing much more, but decided to take a chance. Long story short, the Black & Decker did a great job. Within a few minutes I shaved off just enough for the gate to close without having to take it off it's hinges. Nice and level cut, easy adjustment of depth of cut. Glad I took a chance.

Before I purchased this power planer I used a hand planer to shave down high spot on 2x4 before installing drywall, it cost me about $35 for the hand planer, and it gets difficult when you hit a knot. Then I found this planer for about $65 and it gets the job done in couple seconds compares to hours, it ran through the knot like it's not even there! Not only it's quick, the finish is impressively smooth too. For those (like me) thinking about getting a hand planer just for couple small jobs, the extra $30 is definitely worth it, plus the replacement blades are cheaper than the ones for hand planer.

I recently picked this planer up for a small job that involved squaring some pine. It did a good job but the weaknesses of the tool were fairly obvious after only a little use.



Background: I compared this planer to the comparable Ryobi. The Ryobi had a few features the B&D didn't, mainly a "kickstand" to protect the blade when not being used and a dust port that can be switched from left to right. The Ryobi also had a loose front plate, which didn't seem like a good idea to me. So I chose the B&D.



First the good: It did a very good job on the pine I was planing (which involved 4 pieces glued together that needed to be flat on 2 edges). It was very easy to use and the depth adjustment has very positive indents so you know how much you are removing. In general, I was very impressed with the results I got out of the tool.



The bad: I use hand planes a lot, so I naturally wanted to use the front handle on this power planer. Unfortunately, that is also the depth adjustment, and on my second cut I managed to turn it halfway through, making it deeper. I also wanted to use the fence to square the face I was planing. I was successful in this, but the fence is incredibly flimsy (mostly plastic). It may last fine, but I guess I would prefer all metal or at least thicker plastic. Also, I noticed the motor sounded like it was struggling a bit when I went to the deeper cuts. Maybe this is normal, but it seemed like there could be trouble if you try to do the same thing in hardwood. Finally, I can see why other brands include the kickstand (basically a blade guard, so you're not setting the tool on it's blades all the time). I didn't much like the fact that I would be resting the planer on it's blades every time I set it down (you also have to make sure the blades aren't still spinning, although in my own use this was not an issue).



So, basically, this is a tool that works well, but could maybe use a bit of refining. I returned mine, and I'm not sure what I'll replace it with. FWIW, in this price range, I think there's always going to be a bit of compromise, and I think the B&D's weaknesses are easier to live with than the loose front plate on the Ryobi.

Got this machine 2 months ago from Amazon and really like it. It's very simple and robust. The calibrations were dead on. Just remember to remove the plastic film on the ss tray and wax it before using. For hardwood, I make successive passes by lowering the cutter 1/4 turn each time, and I get very good results.

I paid $205 for this planer at Lowe's because it is being replaced by a Porter Cable model that appeared to me to be nearly the exact same tool. The sales guy at Lowe's told me it was being replaced by the P.C., so I'm taking his word for it. To the review:

Setup was simple, you don't need a narrative about this. It planes smoothly if you take small cuts. I prefer to do no more than 1/4 turn of the adjustment handle at a time, which is somewhere around 1/32" if I had to guess. It can handle a deeper cut, but this is what I prefer to do because it does not bog the tool down. On that note, run it on a 20 amp breaker to give it sufficient power.

If you have dust collection capabilities, buy the optional hood with the dust port because this, like ANY planer, will make a huge mess.

The knives do not last as long as others, but they are two sided and indexed, so setting is a breeze.

This is a decent planer for the customer I believe Delta is targeting - the light hobbyist. It will plane small volumes of wood (4-5 boards at a time (max)) but it will only plane, at most, 1/16" each pass with any amount of quality, and there will still be some snipe. Obviously, you'll spend a lot of time reaching the the desired thickness but for occasional use, that's probably okay. Beware that the unit heats up very quickly and really bogs down if attempting more aggressive cuts, or if attempting to plane hard woods like oak or hickory. bottom line - for the infrequent user, small projects, and soft woods, this will do an adequate job and should last for years.



For serious woodworkers who build large projects on a regular basis, you need a tool with more capacity. You'll burn this tool out very quickly (my motor literally melted), will spend A LOT of project time reaching the desired thickness and will be less than satisfied with the cut quality. Wish I had forked out the extra $200 to get a beefier unit in the first place. Now I'm paying the price - a second time.

While the price may be tempting, if you are wanting this for large projects, large quantities or hardwood, or just a lot of use, invest in a better machine. This will not make the recommended depths of cuts on very many board feet of wood before getting hot. I learned to work in small batches and give the machine a rest, but what I really needed was a planer that could work when I wanted to for as long as I wanted to. The warranty is out on mine, the motor totally shelled and a replacement motor cannot be purchased. This is a low-use throw-away machine and Delta should be ashamed to have their name on it.

Item works pretty well. The only negative is that when this is over the top of a garbage can there is so much force moving the chips out they try to blow out of the garbage can under that tie down strap. Needs to have a wider strap to seat properly (and tighter) onto the garbage can. Overall works much better than throwing wood chips all over my shop area.

PROS:

Having used several other planers, the DeWalt 735 is a real winner. I have 3 of these units. I placed the planers on a Rubbermaid carts & slid 30 gal trash cans below (bottom shelf). What a blessing - to plane & not have dust / chips flying everywhere. Thess planers are super & super easy to use (& change blades).

CONS:

The draw string doesn't grip sufficiently. But, adding a ratcheting strap clamp solves that problem.

The hood works well with a 30 gal trash can but a 55 gal drum would work better if your doing quite a bit of work. Putting a rope over a beam and raising the flex tube in a U shape help's also. I'm happy with the way it work's and on a scale of 1 to 10, I give it an 8 as there is some fine dust that come's through the cloth.

Most useful accessory I have purchased for my shop in years. If you do not have a vacuum system in your shop, the Chip Collection Accessory is a must have.



The chip blower on the DeWalt DW735 planer is powerful enough to direct the chip through the 10 foot plastic hose and into whatever receptacle you secure the fabric hood over. I use a 30 gal plastic garbage can. The draw string secures around the outside of the rim of the garbage can. 95% of the chips are collected directly in the garbage when you operate the planer.



The only negative thing is that with the draw string attaching to the rim of the garbage can, there are some chips that will collect between the outside of the rim and the fabric hood. When you take the hood off, these chips will fall directly on the floor at the base of the garbage can but they are all around the garbage can and makes clean up easier.



As the ground wire connects directly to the DW735 planer making removing the hood a bit more complicated, I crimped a spade type connector onto the end of the wire. When I want to remove the Chip Collector, I simply unplug the ground wire from the DW735 and release the locking collar ring from the planer discharge port.



Good value product. I would definitely recommend this accessory.

 "4 Years running, one small issue has crept in." 2010-02-14

I've been very happy using this planer for the last 4 years but the last time I pulled it out it did something it had never done before. The boards were jerking along, actually stopping and starting. My first thought was the rollers slipping but looking with a flashlight, the rollers were actually stopping. To make a long story short, the grease on the drive chain under the left cover had stiffened up from the cold (and age?) that it was pushing itself over the roller sprocket. Very simple fix, pull the drive chain off, into a can of degreaser, once clean and dry, install and oil. Back to cutting perfect.

I recently purchaced the Makita 2012NB planer and found it to be more than I expected. It is fairly light and easy to move around and it's operation is easy and it does a remarkable job, little or no snipe and requires very little sanding. I haven't had to change blades yet so I'm not sure if it's as easy as they say. For several years I thought Makita was just making high price junk but they definatly have once again are manufacturing quality equiptment.

 "Half as good, twice as good?" 2010-01-20

Unlike some other customers, I found this product to be really good right out of the box, easy to operate, and, once the $20 deflector was attached, easy to clean up after. It's given me many hours of excellent service. But finally came the day when I knew I had to change bladse.



Which was an adventure. To get at the drum, the side if the housing must be removed by undoing phillips screws and allen bolts. As I removed the last of these, a heretofore hidden part clanged to the bottom inside of the assembly. The role of the part wasn't hard to determine -- its size and shaps suggested it was a diagonal brace. But fitting it back in there (if it ever fitted before and wasn't made for some completely different contraption, like a nuclear device or a toaster) is still beyond me. But I have it in a drawer, just in case.



The blades themselves are held in place by the usual single metallic strip, fixed by six bolts (ratchet wrench this time) whose tightening pinches the blade against the drum. Exact fit is achieved by a pair of cleverly designed magnets that align the edge of the blade and allow the blade/strip assembly to be placed on the drum while screws are replaced. Little or no danger to fingers here, if handled according to instructions. These, unhappily, seem to have been written by someone with no working knowledge of either thickness planers or the English tongue. But the ordinary intuitive approach works pretty well here, and with little effort the whole system was restored.



I write all of this because, when I disassembled the system for the first time, I discovered that one of the blades had been set back so far from the edge of the metallic strip that it was completely hidden, and so had never once touched wood in all those months of service! The planer had been hobbling along on one foot, a single blade cutting nicely without help from the opposite side.



Makita knows better. Quality control should assure that both blades extend beyond their housing far enough to be of some use. So what did we learn? Was poor assembly a virtue, showing how well the machine could do on only half of its complement of bladss? Doubtful. Poorly made or badly assembled machinery can teach us only to be more careful ourselves, perhaps by disassembling the easy to reassemble parts before using the machine, to mske sure they're where they need to be.



Next time I do that, I may even discover where the diagonal brace goes.

The planer was all I hoped for, smooth and powerful. I have no reservations in recomending it to anyone, as with all my Makita tools. The method of shipping was the only problem, though, as it was shipped in it's original box with no additional packing. I think that would have been OK if the crank had been removed for shipping as it was broken. I had one aggravating conversation with customer service in that it was suggested I send the whole planer back instead of getting a replacement handle. As we were talking on the phone I went to'[...] the computer and had a handle on the way while we were still talking. Then a second conversation with a much nicer, more knowledgable, rep gave me a 5% discount on my card that more than covered the part and shipping. So I had a little trouble with a very good end result.

All I have ran through so far has been red oak.The planer is so simple to use and the wood will be glass-smooth when you are done, I love it, lets me step up my quality on projects a lot, money well-spent!!!

I have been using this on and off for a year. I have planed Hard Maple, White Oak and also soft wood. It does a fantastic job. Recently I had an incident where the planer will not plane and the boards were getting stuck. I though it was a dull knife. What turned out was that I did not attach a dust collector and the chips were coming in the way. Once I cleansed the chips it worked like a champ with no problems whatsoever. Get this one and you will enjoy your woodworking a lot more. Most of the times the surfaces do not need to be sanded! It may be a little expensive but worth every penny. I have yet to change the blades. I am hoping that it will be an easy task.

Previously I had a Dewalt 733/34 and I did not like it.

 "Good for a first timer" 2010-04-13

This is my first planer so it is difficult to compare against the performance of others, but based on the mix of reviews, I was unsure as of what to expect.



I purchased the feed extensions and the mobile base and set up was simple. I did read the manual as I've never operated one before and within 15 minutes I had made my first successful pass.



I had 3 trees rough sawn from my property. A maple and two black walnuts. I've planed about 60 board feet so far. Based on the blade feedback, I have been taking very light cuts (~1/32) so I don't overheat them. I've cut out the knots in the wood and have widths ranging from 5 to 12 inches and lengths from 1 to six feet. About halfway through the 60 feet of wood, I have noticed a couple of very slight nicks in the blade. But overall they remain sharp.



The finish is above my expectation and I'm quite pleased with it, but then again it's my first look at the results of "home planed" wood so I'm not sure how a pro would rate it.



The dust collection is strong. I have a Jet canister vacuum and the blower on the Dewalt is so strong, I don't even have to turn the Jet on, it just blows right right through about 15' of tube and into the collection bag.



Technique seems to play a big role in the results at the ends of the boards as sometimes they are perfect and sometimes I have some snipe.



Overall, I'm pleased with my choice and I'm hoping the blades last for a reasonable period of time.

I've been planing rough sawn hickory with mine since I got it. And, yes, it takes its toll on the blades. But, I came in and read the reviews before purchasing this planer (my older brother also got one) and several had some really good suggestions on how to minimize the issues that come up. Using wax paper on the bed every so often really helps. Also, I use Mineral Spirits to clean the bed every so many board feet.



A neighbor makes fun of how often I change the blades with the hickory but then, he has a six thousand dollar planer. For my budget, this was and has been a good purchase for me...

I have been using this planer for about two years and still love it. I routinely use it to plane rough hardwoods such as maple, oak, hickory, and walnut. I always run the boards over my joiner first, otherwise this planer has trouble with warped and rough boards. I love how easy it is to change the blades, even thought they are rather expensive. I get about 70 bd ft before I need to change the blades but since they're double sided, I really get about 140+ bd ft per set of blades. I'm very happy with this planer and I would buy it again anytime.

I always due a lot of research before buying any expensive new tool and this was no exception. This was also my first planer. I wanted a quality bench top planer instead of a stand-alone due to limited space (still have to get the car in the garage). Also, I'm more a weekend warrior. I don't do woodworking for a living, i do it for fun. so i couldn't justify 1500+ for a stand-alone. with that said, here is my review:



The planer itself is not enough to give cabinet grade finishes. You have to put another 300 dollars into it for that. The first addition is the runout tables. I have no idea why these were not included with the planer. It is virtually impossible to eliminate snipe without them. I added the runout tables (for 50 bucks) and it drastically reduced if not eliminated the snipe. Where I have had problems with snipe is when the wood i'm planing is slightly warped. unfortunately snipe is unavoidable in this situation and i don't think any planer would make that different.



the second addition (this is the expensive one) is the carbide knives. A lot of people have reported the blades Dewalt supplies do not hold up. If your planning to take large cuts with the factory blades you can forget it. Those blades will wear down very quickly. They're made of high speed steel, not carbide. why would you ever make a cutting tool out of HSS for this application? I have no idea. The factory blades would hold up if your planing 1/32 at a time and your not planing any extremely hard woods like Teak (and honestly i wouldn't feel comfortable planing mahogany with the factory blades). I knew this when purchasing the planer and soon after i purchased the carbide knives (250 bucks) from Infinity Tools (you can find it here on amazon). Those blades took my dewalt planer to a whole new level. I am very pleased with the planer. I have run a few bf of white and red oak thru it so far with the new blades(i will update my review as i get more use out of it). The carbide makes a noticeable difference on how the planer sounds (less load on the motor). and the planed surface is perfect in my opinion. Next project is and 8/4 cherry kitchen table. I am looking forward to seeing how the planer performs.



I gave this planer 4 stars mostly due to the cost to get it up to my standards. total i have 800 bucks invested into it which is still under 1500+ for the stand-alone and i feel i am getting the same quality and durability.



If you want to spend more money: wixey makes a digital readout gage (about 50 bucks again) that bolts right up to this planer. I have it and love it. It increases the precision of the tool overall.

First I'll say that I did not consider this stand at its current price point. I did however find it cheaper (think green tools and a type of bear) and bought it. I was impressed with the packaging and the abused box contained untouched pieces. There is plenty of foam and plastic to protect everything. It took me about 40 minutes to put it together with the planer on top. In my opinion if you can't follow these directions, then you shouldn't be using a planer. They aren't great, but not too difficult to decipher. There is a single bolt at the bottom of each leg like some have mentioned. I too think this is weird, but the stand doesn't need any more support once it's all together because the leg rests on the base. A great idea from "D.E.Meek's" review and supplied pictures is to turn the pedal around on it's hinge if you mount the wheel inside the frame. That modification makes it much more user friendly. I found that I can just lift the frame and the wheel pops down to roll it around, and then push the pedal to pick the wheel up and drop it to the ground. The MDF top is more than sufficient since most of the weight is around the outside. There is no flex. Lastly I like the height but would use caution buying this stand for a scroll saw or sander because it's a little low for that. I'm really happy for the price I paid, but would be more a lot reluctant at $160.

I recently received my DW7350 Mobile Stand and am really impressed with the overall quality and ease of assembly. It took me less that an hour. I purchased this expressly for my D55141 Air Compressor. I am already planning modifications by adding a 24" x 14.5" x 10" high drawer for keeping my pin, brad and finish nailers close at hand, in addition to various air compressor assessories. This drawer will be mounted on bottom slides. I am also adding acorn nuts (8) to the bolt ends on the base, foot pedals and rubber feet for aesthetics. The MDF top is OK, I would have preferred if the planner mount holes had not been predrilled and the top had been an inch or two longer and wider. I will replace the top in the future. I may add a drawer pull to the front short side for ease of moving it around.

I purchased this stand for my DW734 Planer after moving it around by hand was not going to be productive to long term back care.Dewalt has a mounting template for mounting both Dewalt DW734/735 planers,also, it would not be very hard to drill mounting holes for other portable planers out there in the market other than Dewalt to fit this stand.

I found this stand an excellent addition to the DW734 planer. It requires about an hour to assemble, but instructions are complete and all the parts fit. The stand is very stable and compact and contains the vibration of the operating planer well. It allows the planer to be easily moved around the shop, an important feature to me with my limited shop space. Amazon shipping was prompt and on time. Everything considered,this was a good purchase for me.

Good sturdy stand--very solid. Slightly complicated to assemble as the directions don't give a lot of guidance. The pedal that you step on to raise or lower the wheels is in an incredibly awkward place. You can install it either inside the frame or outside. If you choose outside, the pedal will stick out really far and you will trip on it and snag every cord you ever use on it. If you choose to mount it on the inside, you have to contort your body a bit to get your foot under there to push it down and lift it up. The stand is great for its purpose and I would reccommend it, but the pedal was poorly designed.
